Saint Benedict Monastery UNESCO world heritage site in Catania.
The Historic Site Saint Benedict Monastery is located in Via Crociferi already UNESCO World Heritage site, in Catania .
The Monastery of St Benedict was originally erected in 1355, to be rebuilt after the tragic earthquake in Val di Noto, in the early 1700s. Since then, it has become a symbol of Catania, recognizable by the arc that opens via Crociferi, it is said that it was built in one night, and linking the great abbey – which includes the Church of St. Benedict, baroque pearl Catania – to the abbey small.
The abbey is home to the small MACS – The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily.
The monumental monastic complex is today, after centuries of absolute and impenetrable seclusion, a historic-artistic site that offers visitors and tourists a cultural tour that is the result of a unique combination of art, history and contemporaneity. In respect of cloistered nuns who still inhabit the monastery, you can access within the complex, along a predetermined route that allows you to enjoy:
– The archaeological remains of a Roman house, which was found in the basement of the Monastery;
– Some areas of the Monastery of St. Benedict, in particular the old eighteenth-century parlor, already the film set of Franco Zeffirelli’s “History of a blackcap ,” based on the novel by Giovanni Verga;
– The Church of St. Benedict and its imposing entrance Staircase , Staircase call of the Angels;
– The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sicily – MACS – situated in the small abbey of the Monastery.

Cost of ticket: € 5.00 reduction for children between 6 and 18 years € 3.50.

Winter opening, in force since 1 October to 31 March:
h . 09,00 – 18,00 .
Closed on Thursday.
Note : On Sunday, the structure can be visited at the end of the liturgical functions .
